What is gender and how does it affect the way we communicate with each other? This course provides an overview of the ways gendered identities, expressions, discourses, norms and roles affect our information interactions on an individual basis and in groups, online and off. Students will explore topics ranging from communication in family relationships to classroom and workplace communication dynamics to online self representation, applying an intersectional lens to the role of gendered power dynamics in shaping interpersonal communication.

Studio for majors. A comprehensive introduction to drawing as a basic foundation for expression intrinsic to all visual arts disciplines. Variety of media applied to study of line, value and mark-making in pictorial, compositional and content problems in extensive image development including landscape, still-life, and figure.

Introduction to some basic mathematical concepts and techniques central to linguistic theory. Set theory, logic and formal systems, modern algebra, automata theory, and model theory. Applications to syntax, phonology, semantics. No prior mathematics assumed. Not open to math majors.

This seminar examines how global encounters through expanding trade networks shaped material and print culture in early modern China and Japan. Early modern luxury objects were not only coveted items for consumption, but conduits for the exchange of knowledge, scientific discourses, and concepts of cultural difference that were in turn reshaped within local contexts in Europe and Asia.
