PERFORMING THE PUBLIC SELF

The fundamentals of effective presentation for an audience, on the page and/or on the stage, integrating research, writing, memorization, argument building, debate and persuasion, and technology-assisted performance, supported by critical thinking skills, vocal production exercises, and strategies for physical relaxation and poise. The class will involve individual and collaborative exercises in each student’s major or area of interest, as well as practices from other disciplines, and will culminate in a public presentation.

Presenting the Performing Arts

Recognizing the importance of multicultural education and outreach, arts organizations, funders, and community groups are increasingly focusing on the public presentation and documentation of community-based music and other performing arts for general audiences. This course will introduce students to the basics of arts administration and public presentation of the arts. While we will focus primarily on music and musical performance, we will also consider theater, dance, performance art, and other other cultural expressions and organizations.
