Consciousness

Although curiosity about the nature of consciousness has animated the work of philosophers, artists and others, this course will approach the topic from a scientific perspective.  How do electrochemical signals in our brain produce our experience of colors, sounds, tastes and our awareness of ourselves? We will read and discuss primary source scientific journal articles drawn from both psychology and neuroscience with a focus on questions including: What kinds of brain activity distinguish conscious from unconscious states?

Eur Economy, 1050-1750

(Offered as HIST 425 [EU/P] and EUST 425) The history of the pre-modern European economy is usually understood as the singular and exceptional rise of the first modern economy. Yet recent research in economic history and shifts in the world economy have provided new perspectives to reconsider the rise of the European economy. From this long-term and global viewpoint, the story of Europe’s economic take-off becomes the remarkable story of a backwater that became mainstream.

ST-Blue Planet: Dynamic Oceans

This course surveys the broad field of marine science, which includes the sub-disciplines of oceanography and marine biology. It's intended to provide incoming students (first-year students) with an introductory survey and overview of the many facets of the marine sciences, including basic (simplified) physics, biology, chemistry and geology of the oceans and their diverse marine environments and marine life forms. We will stress the interconnections among aspects of oceanography, marine biology and ecology, living marine resources, and human interactions with the marine environment.

Intro To Geochemstry

The origin, evolution, and maintenance of the Earth's systems from a geochemical perspective. Some of the fundamental discoveries that have shaped our understanding of the planet: the principles of radiometric age dating; how the crust and mantle achieved their present composition; the power of stable isotopes in unraveling paleoenvironments; the biochemical processes that led to the present composition of the atmosphere and the ocean.

S- Black Theater Workshop

Black Theater Workshop is a focused exploration of the work of selected Black Theater Artist through research and performance of their work and related material. Participants will gain an understanding of the meaning of "Black Theater" and acquire practical approaches to analyzing and performing this particular kind of work.

Financial Decision Making/Hosp

This course provides students with a basic understanding of managerial finance concepts, tools, and techniques to help financial decision-making in the hospitality business. The overall goal is to help students use accounting and financial information to make sound investment and financing decisions for optimum management of a hospitality firm?s assets and value creation.

Economics and Ethics

This course explores ethical questions and debates associated with a wide range of economic issues. The class will look at concepts of economic justice and fairness, motivations in economics, unintended consequences of economic choices, the role of government, corporate social responsibility, inequality, environmental challenges, and globalization. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-Econ majors.
