Grantwriting for the Arts

Grantwriting is one of the many tools in fundraising and is a necessary skill of arts managers and artists who seek to support their work with grants. This course will teach the nuts and bolts of grantsmanship, including introducing the vocabulary and philosophy of grantwriting, the hallmarks of a well-written proposal, and the basics of grant searching. The class will use the Colorado Common Grant application as its organizing principle, selected because it is both comprehensive and reflects a growing trend in grantmaking.

Arts Fundraising

Recent statistics show that while most nonprofit arts organizations will earn half their income, the remainder must be raised from individual donors and grants. Other than earned income, the largest source of revenue for arts organizations continues to be individual donors at 35.5%. Now, more than ever, it is essential for arts managers to know how to develop and implement an effective fundraising program that draws its strength from a variety of sources, and focuses on building relationships as its foundation.

Arts Marketing

Marketing is the most important tool to build awareness of your programs and services, and - if properly planned - can help you to reach new audiences and cultivate loyalty in those you already serve. This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of marketing for arts and cultural programs. You will learn basic marketing concepts, such as understanding the marketing mix, utilizing environmental analysis, developing position statements and branding an organization to help you formulate effective marketing strategies.

S-Foundtn/ArtsEntrepreneurship

This 3-credit course is designed as a primer in entrepreneurship for arts students and those in cognate fields. Students will examine the breadth of professional opportunities available in the Creative Economy and explore strategies for pursuing them. Based on these examinations, students will construct a personal mission statement, build an individualized portfolio of materials appropriate for professional development purposes, and begin a journal to formulate, collect, and grow creative venture ideas.

Introduction to Arts Managemnt

Arts Managers perform the work that is rquired to bring the arts and cultural programs to audiences, organizing programs such festivals and exhibits, performing arts events and film screenings. This course will introduce you to the "business of the arts," providing you with an overview of the careers in arts management, the types of work that arts managers do, and the current issues and trends now affecting arts management professionals.

ST- News and Public Opinion

This course is designed to offer a framework for understanding the processes involved in news production and its impact on public opinion. We will examine various social forces that shape news content, including individual, political, economic, and institutional factors. We will also examine research and theory on the implications of today's new media environment, with a focus on its relationship with citizens' engagement in public life.

ST-Refugees,Borders,Migration

This course surveys major refugee crises of the past 75 years to provide a historical backdrop for understanding contemporary challenges surrounding refugees from war, environmental collapse, economy, and politics. Starting with the massive displacement of 40 million Europeans resulting from WWII and the establishment of the U.N. High Commission on Refugees, we will examine causes, popular responses, policy proposals, and outcomes of previous crises involving decolonization in Africa and Asia, the break-up of the Soviet Union, and war in the Middle East.

ST-Advanced Business Analytics

This course covers topics in Advanced Business Analytics, including managerial data mining, text mining, and decision trees, and more advanced data retrieval and manipulation. Models from statistics AI (e.g., regression, clustering, neural nets, classification, association rule modeling, etc.) will be applied to real data sets. In this managerially focused course, students will learn about when and how to use techniques and how to interpret output. Students will also learn how to extract and manipulate data using various software and programming languages.

From policy "nudges" to persuasive campaign ads to get out the vote efforts, experiments are increasingly being used to shape many aspects of political and social life. In the course, you will get a chance to participate in, read about, and discuss a wide range of experiments related to politics, policy and political behavior.

Cncpt Moleclr Genetc

Fundamental concepts of molecular genetics; from the central dogma to recent progress in DNA replication, recombination, and transposition, and mechanisms of gene regulation. Emphasis on design of experiments and interpretation of experimental data in microbial systems. Prerequisite: general background in biochemistry and molecular genetics.
