ST- Confucianism

Confucianism is a nuanced and complex idea of a comprehensive culture that stems from Heaven and acts on earth through nature and human society. In its many forms, it is also a central ethos of all the civilizations of East Asia. In this course we will read from key books of the Confucian tradition, from its origins with Confucius (551-479 BC) to the Tang dynasty (618-907). Primary readings will be in classical Chinese, with secondary materials in English.

ST-Phil & Religion/Chinese Lit

In this seminar we will read some of the great books of the Chinese tradition, not only for their literary qualities, but also for their profound philosophical and religious ideas - questions of the divine in human life, ethics, the nature and reality of the self, politics, and many others. Readings will include works of philosophy, history, poetry, Buddhist sutras, drama, and fiction. All readings and discussion will be in English. No Chinese language is required. This course counts for credit toward the Chinese major.

How is sustainable development imagined, discursively constructed, and implemented in different locations? Who and what benefits from sustainable development and who and what suffers? What is the relationship between economy and ecology? And how might we begin to imagine, organize around, and enact truly sustainable and socially just worlds?

S- Eisler:FilmSoundtrTheoryPol

Hans Eisler, together with Adorno, is one of the major 20th century theorists of film music. At the same time, Eisler was a prolific composer of soundtracks. This seminar examines films from the diverse periods of Eisler's activity: Weimar Germany; Hollywood Exile; Communist East Germany. Our focus will be the evolving role of music and sound in relation to narrative (and genre convention) in changing political and historical constellations.

Principles Envir Site Assessmt

Training in the ASTM method for detecting recognized indicators of petroleum and hazardous material contamination at properties of concern to local communities. Phase I and II techniques including record file research, site reconnaissance, and subsurface investigations. Information obtained on project sites assembled into Phase I Environmental Site Assessment Reports for submission to interested municipalities. Prerequisites: BIOLOGY 151, CHEM 111, or equivalents.

Advanced Russian

Conducted in Russian. Grammatical structure, principles of word building, exercises, translation, readings, close analysis of texts. Goal: understanding lectures in Russian; ability to respond with some degree of fluency; vocabulary sufficient to be able to read using a dictionary. Prerequisite: a year of intermediate Russian or equivalent.

Layout and Design

To examine the fundamental relationships between the organization of the workplace, the flow of people, materials, parts and information, and the optimal performance of these system components. Manufacturing and service organizations require that undergraduates of the Industrial Engineering and Operations Research curriculum be grounded in the fundamental concepts, tools, and techniques for planning, design, and analysis of the physical environment and configuration of systems along with the ability to evaluate the dynamic interchanges which interrelates the system components.

Southern Literature

Southern literature by African Americans, including slave narratives, autobiography, fiction and poetry. Concepts and issues of time, oppression and violence, culture and tradition, family and community, roots of social change as they impact factors of identity, race, class, and gender. (Gen.Ed. AL, U)
