Jr Yr Common Exp: 1960s

Many of the things we accept as modern social, political, artistic and scientific movements have their roots in the 1960s. This course, designed to bring junior honors college students into a common intellectual experience, will feature a series of twelve lectures delivered by dynamic professors noted in their fields, on such topics as the Vietnam War, Student Activism, Health Care, Space Program, Civil Rights Movement, Counterculture Movements, Environmentalism, Architecture, Black Power, and Women?s Rights. ST-Soil Erosion/Agr Landscapes

Soils are the medium that grows the vast majority of the food consumed world-wide, yet soil erosion diminishes agricultural production and ultimately threatens food security. In the U.S. major uncertainties still exist regarding the rates of soil erosion and soil formation. This research-intensive course will explore soils and soil erosion in the Midwestern U.S., one of the world's most important agricultural landscapes. Students will conduct a semester-long research project. During a pre-semester field trip, students will collect soils and make a variety of field measurements.

Visual Analytics

In this course, students will work on solving complex problems in data science using exploratory data visualization and analysis in combination. Students will learn to deal with the Five V's: Volume, Variety, Velocity, Veracity, and Variability, that is with large data, complex heterogeneous data, streaming data, uncertainty in data, and variations in data flow, density and complexity. Students will be able to select the appropriate tools and visualizations in support of problem solving in different application areas.

ST-Language,Gender & Sexuality

This course will consider how cross-cultural studies of language and language ideologies can challenge our received notions of what gender is and how language, gender, and sexuality are interconnected.
Among the topics covered are: institutional language and power; gender identity and language use; cultural definitions of "masculinity" and "femininity" and their relationship to language use; sexual orientation and linguistic expression; and the social construction and expression of sexual and gender identities through linguistic performance.

Fundmentl Vet & Biomedical Lab

Introductory course prepares students for further lab related work. Topics include lab measurements, solution preparation, instrumentation, practical laboratory exercises. Clinical topics include human and animal hematology, clinical chemistry, diagnostic biology, parasitology and molecular diagnostics with lab exercises that are applicable to veterinary or biomedical clinical laboratories.

Envrnmntl Geophysics

Application of seismic, gravity, magnetic, and electrical methods used in geophysical exploration. Field techniques, data compilation, and basic interpretations used to support shallow subsurface studies and environmental or hydrologic programs. Lectures, laboratory and field problems.
