Greening/Nonprofit Arts Org

The arts have long been leaders and mirrors of social change, daring to move forward where others will not tread. In this course we take a step-by-step approach to Green your nonprofit arts organization, build community excitement while cutting operating costs, find and create internal allies, find financial support, communicate a Green philosophy to donors and patrons, identify and make substantive change, and educate and lead our audiences toward a green future.

Financial Managmnt in the Arts

Designed especially for those who are intimidated by or unfamiliar with financial concepts, this course will introduce you to developing a budget, as well as how to read and interpret financial statements, such as income statements, cash flow statements and balance sheets. Through discussion and hands-on exercises, you will explore ways of developing and sustaining fiscal responsibility throughout an organization, including the understanding of roles and responsibilities of the board of directors, management and staff.

Arts Programming

Quality arts programming is at the core of all arts and culture organizations, yet many arts mangers struggle with how to present a program, once they have developed an idea. In this course, you will learn how to develop an arts programming philosophy and plan programs that connect the arts with audiences. The course will examine culturally specific and controversial programming, explore exemplary programs, and review technical and logistical support requirements.

Introduction to Arts Managemnt

Arts Managers perform the work that is rquired to bring the arts and cultural programs to audiences, organizing programs such festivals and exhibits, performing arts events and film screenings. This course will introduce you to the "business of the arts," providing you with an overview of the careers in arts management, the types of work that arts managers do, and the current issues and trends now affecting arts management professionals.

Intro to Media and Culture

This course considers how media and their surrounding economic and institutional frameworks affect cultural, political and ideological processes. The course introduces foundational theories of the media focusing on industries, technologies, media influence, meaning, and media audiences/users. Throughout the course we will consider how media influence our cultural assumptions regarding justice, identities (shaped by gender, racial identity, ethnicity, sexuality, and social class), and the nature of social life.

Business Process Simulation

Computer simulation presented for carrying out trial-and-error experiments on computer approximations of real, management systems. The goal is to 1) validate a new idea quickly, 2) diagnose potential product design problems, 3) optimize performance of complex systems, and 4) learn about something complex. The Arena environment, based on the SIMAN language, used to build models and video game-like animations.

Public Opinion in Politics

This course explores the landscape of opinion on a variety of political topics to develop an understanding about how the public thinks about issues and why they think the way they do. It also examines how peoples' opinions influence their behavior, and whether or not political leaders follow the "will of the public" or manipulate public opinion to achieve their own aims.
