EMPIRICAL METHODS IN POL SCI

The fundamental problems in summarizing, interpreting and analyzing empirical data. Topics include research design and measurement, descriptive statistics, sampling, significance tests, correlation and regression. Special attention is paid to survey data and to data analysis using computer software. Enrollment limit of 75.

TOPC: 19TH CENT WOMEN WRITERS

Topics course.: We discuss short stories, essays and novels by German and Austrian women writers in the long 19th century. What do these texts reveal about gender and class relations in Germany and Austria in the 19th century? How do women authors represent female sexuality and the institution of marriage? And how do they address the political unrest of their time? We read both canonical and non-canonical texts by Gabriele Reuter, Helene Böhlau, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Louise Otto, Clara Viebig and Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach. Conducted in German.

AMERICA AND THE GERMANS

German people, culture and thought have shaped or otherwise influenced various aspects of American history and society in a profound way. This course will examine the impact of this influence over the last two centuries on American high and popular culture across different media (film, video, advertising, print, etc.) and the image of things German that has evolved in the U.S. as a result. Course conducted in English. No previous knowledge of the subject is necessary.

CLTR OF GERMAN-SPEAKING EUROPE

This course provides curious students with a practical guide to the cultures of German-speaking Europe from Teutonic barbarians to Teutonic rap. This course focuses on the interconnectedness of many diverse areas of German culture through the centuries (literature, art, philosophy, music, domestic culture, popular culture) and their relationship to contemporary life and society. Class discussions and practice sessions emphasize the application of this knowledge to today’s world. No previous knowledge of German culture or language required. Conducted in English.

PHYSICAL CHEM BIOCHEM SYS LAB

(Formerly CHM 335) This course emphasizes the physical chemistry of biological systems. Topics covered include chemical thermodynamics, solution equilibria, enzyme kinetics and biochemical transport processes. The laboratory focuses on experimental applications of physical-chemical principles to systems of biochemical importance. Prerequisites: 224 or permission of the instructor, and MTH 112.

KOREAN POPULAR CULTURE

Topics course.: Changing representations of Korean food in contemporary media reflect a new transnational cosmopolitanism. By analyzing changing representations of Korean food in contemporary media genres, the class asks how food has become a new locus of both grounding and mediation in the imaginations of workers, immigrants, tourists, international students and exiles in constant motion between shifting centers and peripheries.
