Economic development in the U.S. from colonial era to present. America as a raw materials producer, an agrarian society, and an industrial nation. Possible topics: development of economic systems, demographic trends, industrialization, regional development, growth of large-scale enterprise and organized labor, changing role of government. This course will offer systematic examination of a variety of philosophical issues raised by the existence of gender roles in human society: Is the existence or content of such roles determined by nature? Are they inherently oppressive? How does the category gender interact with other socially significant categories, like race, class, and sexual orientation? What would gender equality look like? How do differences among women complicate attempts to generalize about gender?

The goal of this seminar is to provide an introduction to animal cognition. We will examine cognitive abilities in a variety of species, from invertebrates to nonhuman primates. Major topics to be discussed include: perception and attention, learning and memory, spatial representation, social cognition, tool-use, imitation and culture, communication and language, theory of mind, and the evolution of cognition.
