This Honors Colloquium focuses on the intersection of humorous incongruity and the concept of the uncanny. Incongruity is one of the most important ideas in humor studies (just as the uncanny is to horror studies), and several social theorists invoke both in attempts to understand marginality in society. Moreover, U.S. American society has seen the rise of entertainment genres and cultural movement that draw liberally from both. We will examine and interrogate this intersection throughout the semester.
