This seminar is a required course for Commonwealth Honors College students where students participate in a topical seminar-style course designed by its instructor. While the subject matter of each section is different, advanced knowledge of the topic is not required. Integration of linear models with experimental design and sampling, considering applications with unbalanced and missing data. In-depth discussion of mixed models including parameterizations, analysis of covariance, unequal numbers of observations per cell, missing cells. Repeated measure designs and longitudinal data analysis emphasized, with many examples illustrated using SAS. Prerequisite: BIOST&EP 640 and 691F or equivalent. Recommended: Bioepi 741 and 744.

Course description: Enrollment required for students serving as representatives to the STPEC Executive Committee. Requirements for credit include: attending an orientation session and all student representative and full Executive Committee meetings, delivering weekly announcements to designated STPEC courses and, in STPEC courses in which they are enrolled, facilitating a 15 min forum prior to both full Executive Committee meetings.

Topics course. This seminar takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding emerging and resurgent infectious diseases. We focus on those aspects of the biology of hosts and pathogens that drive the transmission of diseases, on the ecological factors (migration, climate change, population growth) that contribute to the spread of disease, and on the epidemiological approaches that measure the spread and impact of infectious agents. Ultimately, the seminar seeks to establish an evidence-driven framework for rational public health decision-making at the local, national and global levels.
