An Honors introduction to ethics through issues of medicine and health care. Topics include abortion, treatment of impaired infants, euthanasia, physician-assisted suicide, truth-telling, medical experimentation on human beings and on animals, and the allocation of scarce medical resources. Deep learning has been termed one of the leading scientific breakthroughs in recent years (MIT Technology Review). It has attracted significant industrial investment with large groups at Google, Facebook, Baidu, IBM, Microsoft etc. working on a plethora of commercial applications of deep learning. It has resulted in state of the art performance in a variety of areas, including computer vision, natural language processing, reinforcement learning, and speech recognition. This course is intended to provide students with an in-depth introduction to both theory and practice of deep learning.

This course will introduce students to the traditions and expectations of the Journalism Program, as well as resources and opportunities that will help them as they move through the major. Through workshops and exercises, students will meet faculty, get to know campus media and career services staff, learn about the writing and academic expectations of the program.

Interdisciplinary exploration of basic issues of law's relationship to contemporary society, in which law affects almost all human activity. Topics include the nature as well as historical and social functions of law; the culture and role of major actors in the legal system (lawyers, judges, juries, police, technology); tension between ideals and realities in law; role of law in addressing contemporary social problems.
