This course introduces core political economy concepts from both classical and modern thinkers while engaging in contemporary debates about the relationship between states and markets. Students will read Smith, Marx, List, Polanyi, Keynes, Hayek, and others, as well as engage with questions such as: What is political economy? Why and how do capitalist systems differ? Why are some countries wealthier and more prosperous than others? What is the role of the state in the economy, market, and development?

Consolidation of language skills (esp. speaking, reading and writing). Students will broaden their exposure to Italian culture and literature through progressively more complex readings, writing, and other cultural experiences (music, film, etc.) Conducted in Italian; will count as an elective towards the Major or Minor. 3 credits. Prerequisite: Italian 240 or 246 or permission of the Department.

This course is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of the financing alternatives that may be available to a growing enterprise during its life cycle and the costs and benefits of each. After reviewing the basics of capital structure, the course covers a full range of financing options from traditional venture capital to corporate investments, government grants and funding techniques that make use of the internet. The course also addresses some of the strategic financial decisions that the entrepreneur encounters as the company matures.

This course offers a hemispheric and comparative approach to the study of Anglo- and Latin American literature and culture from the late fifteenth until the eighteenth century, from the age of exploration to the late colonial period. We will look at a wide variety of texts produced in the wake of European imperial expansion in the Americas (e.g. letters, journals, natural histories, ethnographies, captivity narratives and travel accounts) that chronicle the creation of the so-called New World.

Using legal history and legal theory, this honors course will examine the ways women are represented within the law, focusing specifically on the legal treatment and representation of women in the United States. We will examine the ways that the law has oppressed women and also the prospects for the law as a liberating force. Finally, we will look at ways that women have used the law to represent themselves.
