S-Rule of Law vs Rule/Experts

Policymaking in today's complex, technologically advanced societies could not proceed without the continual involvement of experts. What is the place of law in the modern regulatory state? How does justice differ from cost-benefit analysis? Who should have the final say: judges or policy experts? Do different legal systems approach the dilemma of guaranteeing administrative justice in different ways?

This course examines the role that law and courts have played in shaping, defining, and constructing the concepts of race and American citizenship over time. We will explore topics such as the legal definition of whiteness, racial restrictions in immigration and citizenship law, the 14th Amendment's expansion of citizenship to include former slaves, the legal rights of non-citizens, the ambiguous racial and citizenship status of Native Americans, and the significance of the enduring belief in a colorblind Constitution.

ST-PolicyImplementn&Design

This course will survey the various ways to design and implement effective public policies. It will focus on the policy tools available for improving the implementation and management of policies, and under what conditions are these policies more effective. Students will learn about the basic scholarly literature on policy design and implementation, and be better able to develop and analyze public policies.

Hebrew through the Media II

Continuation of Hebrew 343. Instruction of Hebrew through the use of: clips from Israeli feature films and from other video sources (TV programs, documentaries, etc.); radio broadcasts, popular songs and other audio recordings; newspaper items; and multimedia computer programs. Most materials will be web-based, some on CD's/DVD's. When available, the resources used will include interactive assignments. A variety of proficiency levels will be accommodated, but at least three semesters of Hebrew are required.

Sculpture 1-Intro to Sculpture

An introduction to a range of basic sculptural processes and materials with an emphasis on formal investigation and intellectual query. Projects cover basic sculptural principles and hand skills with an emphasis on working from observation. This course will introduce basic additive and reductive processes including wood, metal and clay/plaster. Prerequisite: Foundation w/3d component.

S-Critical Race Feminisms

This course will explore the intersection of race and gender and other components of social identity from an interdisciplinary perspective. It will address and respond to the unique challenges of the inter and intra relationships of women of color with feminism, locally and globally. One of the tasks will be to (re)-visit, (re)-vision, (re)-counter existing theories and bodies of knowledge, as well as analyze how historical and contemporary realities of women of color are profoundly influenced by a legacy of structural inequalities that is neither linear nor logical.
