S-Aging and Cognition

This seminar provides an overview of the cognitive changes that occur as a function of normal and, to a lesser extent, pathological aging. We will cover a broad variety of topics including theories of cognitive aging, brain aging, animal models of cognitive aging, hormonal influences and menopause, and interventions for successful aging.

S-Adv Topics in Neuroscience

The focus of the course is stress and disease. Students will learn about the neural circuits and biochemical mechanisms underlying the body's response to stress and how stress impacts disease. The bulk of the reading material for this course will consist of primary (peer-reviewed) research and review articles on stress and disease in animal models (some clinical papers in humans may also be covered). Students are expected to actively participate during class, give presentations, and write a research project proposal.

This course is an introduction to Catalan for students with no prior knowledge of the language. Through a task-based, communicative approach, this course seeks to initiate students into the elements of reading, writing, listening, and speaking in Catalan.

S-Stigma and Mental Illness

Despite many advances in the diagnoses and treatment of mental illness, those afflicted with mental illness remain one of the most highly stigmatized groups in society. In this seminar, we will investigate stigma associated with mental illness from diverse perspectives, including social psychology, clinical psychology, evolutionary psychology, sociology, public policy, history, and biology.
