State & Local Health Politics

The course will provide an understanding of the structure of the political process in the state and local health policy making. The political roles of the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government in state and local health policy will be examined, as well as political roles that public health professionals assume in the community.

The capital "L" Law is the most conspicuous tool that government uses to exert control over the behavior of people and institutions. In spite of the authority of the government, the Law is never fully settled and, there is an ongoing struggle to configure the legal system. This is true especially along the conspicuous fault lines that we recognize as culture war issues. This course will examine those "hot button" topics and will drill down into what exactly is going on in real time as various factions attempt to shape the Law to their purposes.

Resilience is the ability to adapt and recover quickly after difficulties or dramatic change. Psychologists study resilience as an important aspect of mental health, but it is also an idea that is applied to the economy and to the environment. Scholars and social activists are increasingly making connections between these different ideas of resilience and applying them to personal and societal responses to economic and environmental challenges. Each week we?ll read and discuss or debate an article that uses the idea of resilience.

Descriptive and inferential statistics through hypothesis testing. This course differs from ResEcon 212 in that students use additional statistical tools to understand the properties of estimators and the theory behind confidence interval estimation and hypothesis testing. For undergraduates interested in this broad discipline, it can be useful to appreciate early the distinctions among different clinically oriented careers. Furthermore, because clinical professionals have master or doctoral degrees, it is essential to understand the types of experiences that undergraduates should (and in fact need to ) explore to help prepare them for such advanced study.
