For students new to UMass and the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences, this course prepares students to set academic and personal goals, take full advantage of University offerings, build self-reliance through college-level study skills, and ready themselves for success.

Astrophysics II:Galaxies

The application of physics to the understanding of astronomical phenomena. Physical processes in the gaseous interstellar medium: photoionization in HII regions and planetary nebulae; shocks in supernova remnants and stellar jets; energy balance in molecular clouds. Dynamics of stellar systems: star clusters and the virial theorem; galaxy rotation and the presence of dark matter in the universe; spiral density waves. Quasars and active galactic nuclei: synchroton radiation; accretion disks; supermassive black holes.

ST-PoliEcon/War,Conflct,Peace

This course seeks to answer questions like these: Who benefits from war and civil conflict, and who loses? How can we assess the nature and size of their gains and losses? Who therefore has an interest in creating or perpetuating war or civil conflict? What economic conditions are conducive to peace, and what economic policies promote peace?

Res Meth In Int Educ

Introduction to research methods; students enabled to design and carry out field studies in international education. Techniques used in various social sciences; examples of their application to problems in international education. Survey methods, attitude and value analysis, interviewing and participant-observation techniques and research design. Models of design and techniques presented for critique. Each student sets up a research design and method outline for a specific project.
