This seminar is a required course for Commonwealth Honors College students where students participate in a topical seminar-style course designed by its instructor. While the subject matter of each section is different, advanced knowledge of the topic is not required. Seminar-sized course in literary and rehtorical criticism. Organized around themes, it stresses analysis from critical and theoretical perspectives that sharpen understanding of texts, their contexts, and our reading of them.

In this course we will read narratives of individual and collective cultural transformations from the colonial and early republican periods in American literature. We will trace throughout these narratives various figurations of "American" subjectivity, such as the captive and the redeemed; the slave, the servant, and the freeman; the alien and the citizen; the foreign and the native. Through such textual figures, we will explore as well the cultural production of a broader narrative of the ?imagined community? of the nation.

Introduction to literary study, concentrating on close reading and analysis of texts, writing and revising critical essays, and discussion of the issues that underlie the study of literature. Prerequisite: ENGLWRIT 112 or equivalent. This course is open to Pre-English (PR-ENGL) majors only

Presentations of research by Organismic and Evolutionary Biology graduate students.

This course will present proteins, nucleic acids, and oligosaccharides from the perspective of organic chemistry. Methods for their synthesis, purification, and chemical manipulations will be discussed, focusing on the application of chemical approaches to studying biological questions. For each topic, appropriate bioanalytical techniques will be emphasized.
