S-The Unexceptional US

We will attempt to read and interpret historically in ways that move beyond national, and nationalist, readings of U.S. history. Rather than survey all of American social and cultural history in a single speeding semester, we will focus on four particular periods of U.S. history, four moments where events in America received international attention. We'll begin with the colonial encounter, then skip to the Age of Revolutions, followed by Harlem Renaissance, and, finally, end in the Vietnam war.

S-Neuroplasticity

The potential plasticity of the nervous system has therapeutic implications that have, in recent years, been marketed to help people "train their brains" to improve cognitive function. This class will discuss the biological mechanisms of neural plasticity, as well as the theory and methodology of intervention- or training-based neuroscience research. Most importantly, we will assess the validity of interventions designed to improve brain functioning by critically evaluating the primary research articles that are the basis of this rapidly growing field.

S-Speech Perception

The course will examine human speech recognition. A special focus will be on how humans recognize the sounds and words a speaker produces from both hearing and seeing the speaker. We will examine the basic mechanisms and mental representations involved in how humans recognize speech from these two modalities. We will discuss original research articles describing empirical research and prominent theories and models of speech perception. Students are expected to actively participate in class discussions, give presentations, work on group projects, and write a research project proposal.

Media, Public Opinion, & LGBT

LGBT rights continue to be one of the most contentiosu issues in American politics. Why is this so? In this course, we will critically examine social science research that has tried to answer these questions. A key emphasis in this class is on the tole of mass media, and the role that it plays in public opinion change.
