By the end of the semester, you will be able to say, "I know how we acquire a second (third, fourth) language!" You will develop a strong knowledge of second language acquisition: its challenges, major theories and why it is fascinating. We will go over Bilingualism as well, and explore the differences between adult and child acquisition. Active participation required, presentations, readings every week, for a class led as a seminar. Designed for students not majoring in linguistics.

Fundamentals of Speech Sounds

The course provides an introduction to the rich diversity of the sounds of the world?s languages and how they pattern?what they are, how they are produced, and commonalities and differences between languages and their sound systems. You will also acquire foundational tools for analyzing speech sounds and patterns.

S-Adv Korean/Premodern History

In this course, students will learn advanced level Korean language through Pre-modern Korean history. Students will achieve deeper understanding of Korean culture and society through a lens of history. Students will read the main course materials in Korean and discuss major events and the meanings of them in the context of Korean history. Along with the written text material, various types of media will be used such as movies, literature, songs, news, pictures and the television and radio programs, etc.

Wellness/Service Industries

This course explores wellness and wellbeing in business, particularly hospitality and service industries. The course examines three pillars of wellness and wellbeing in business: wellness and wellbeing in the customer experience, wellness and wellbeing initiatives for employees, and wellness and wellbeing business practices and strategies. First, the course examines the customer perspective including wellbeing practices in business and how this affects customer wellbeing and the customer experience. Second, it examines employee wellbeing in how firms take care of their human assets.

Spiritual Autobiogrp

Exploration of stories of inner experience, the growth of self-awareness, the dark night of the soul, and the role of suffering in individuals' lives. Reading from a variety of spiritual autobiographies from around the world, by both believers and non-, we will explore the meaning of storytelling and how our various beliefs can shape our understanding of the world. Assignments include autobiographical writing as well as more traditional essays. (Gen.Ed. AL, DG)

Intens Elem Chin II

Continuation of CHINESE 120 or 126. Further developing aural-oral skills in modern standard Chinese (Mandarin). Focus gradually shifts toward reading and writing. Introduces the next 400 characters in simplified form, principles of character simplification, and the use of Chinese-English dictionaries.
