Intro Legal Studies

Interdisciplinary exploration of basic issues of law's relationship to contemporary society, in which law affects almost all human activity. Topics include the nature as well as historical and social functions of law; the culture and role of major actors in the legal system (lawyers, judges, juries, police, technology); tension between ideals and realities in law; role of law in addressing contemporary social problems.

THE DEAF CHILD: 0-5 YEARS

The effects of deafness on the development of children and their families during the first five years of life. Topics such as auditory, cognitive, language, speech, social and emotional development in deaf infants and young children are discussed. Parent counseling issues such as emotional reactions to deafness, interpretation of test results and making educational choices are also presented.

Education is increasingly data driven- data is used to evaluate classroom pedagogy, student achievement, teacher efficacy, and school failure. It is important for educators then, to be able to interpret complex data and make research-based decisions. This course will foster student?s ability to critically interpret education-related data by concentrating on the application of critical thinking skills to arguments involving statistics in education. The student will emerge as a knowledgeable consumer of statistics rather than a producer of statistical calculations.

COUNSELING THEORY & EDUCATION

This course introduces various theories of counseling and their application to children, adolescents and families. Behaviors that signal a need for attention and counseling will be discussed. Students will learn more about themselves as individuals and learners, and, how to listen actively to others. Enrollment limited to 55.
