Media, Public Opinion, & LGBT

LGBT rights continue to be one of the most contentiosu issues in American politics. Why is this so? In this course, we will critically examine social science research that has tried to answer these questions. A key emphasis in this class is on the tole of mass media, and the role that it plays in public opinion change.

Mobile Hlth Sensing/Monitoring

This course is an introduction to personal health sensing and monitoring through mobile phones and on-body sensors and addresses several aspects including mobile devices and applications for health, sensor data quality and reliability challenges, interference of key feedback, and practical considerations such as battery lifetime.

ST-The Springfield Renaissance

This course uses the arts as a lens to study various historical sites in downtown Springfield and introduces students to the history of art in Springfield and its impact on the community. (No previous art experience necessary.) The class examines the practical applications of art in relation to history, society, museum and gallery studies, culture and personal expression.

ST-Girls in the System

This 200-level, interdisciplinary seminar will consider the role of gender in the juvenile justice system, in the United States and transnationally. Drawing on sociological literature, social critiques, policy papers, case law, documentary film, personal narratives, and even fiction, we will learn about and reflect upon the issues experienced by girls in the system. Final assignment will be student-driven, in consultation with instructor.

Advanced Conversation

Course taught in French. Conversation practice on assigned topics. Dictation of prepared texts to improve listening comprehension. Recitation of short passages of French poetry and prose to improve pronunciation. Prerequisites: Completion of a French 240 level course.

S-Voices/New Africa House

A mixed-voice choral music class celebrating two methods of teaching: by ear to perform a cappella and by sheet music containing arrangements for 4-part harmony with piano accompaniment. Learn to sing material from the African-American song-style canon. We will study and perform music created in the 17, 18 and 19th centuries beginning with creations by slaves in the United States through the 20 and 21st century?s contemporary sounds. Other genres we will explore come under the umbrella of blues, jazz, gospel, R&B, soul, funk and folk music.

ST-Law in Film & TV

This class examines popular television and film?s depictions of the law and the legal profession. We take a rigorously critical approach to film and television as examples of cultural production. Therefore, we study these media for what they say about social identity, representation and deployment of law and power in U.S. society.
