This course will cover a range of topics related to fear, anxiety, and anxiety disorders. We will explore the science of fear learning and the factors that influence the development of anxiety and related disorders, as well as the evidence-based assessment and treatment of anxiety disorders. There will be a special emphasis on translating research findings into clinical applications and practice.

In this course, students will explore approaches to teaching about disability and ableism, from early childhood through adulthood. Students will research best practices to raise awareness and understanding of disability as diversity in school, home, higher education and community settings. Students will have the opportunity to facilitate activities, workshops and trainings in campus and community settings.

Despite many advances in the diagnoses and treatment of mental illness, those afflicted with mental illness remain one of the most highly stigmatized groups in society. In this seminar, we will investigate stigma associated with mental illness from diverse perspectives, including social psychology, clinical psychology, evolutionary psychology, sociology, public policy, history, and biology.

Research in Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience is constantly revealing new facts about how we see, hear, speak, move, recognize, remember, learn, and reason. The goal of these scientific studies is to explain these mental processes thoroughly and completely. However, many people feel that there is something about our consciousness or inner mental life that can never be explained by any scientific theory, no matter how advanced. In this seminar, we will ask what consciousness is, and will assess what current science can tell us about it.

The goal of this seminar is to provide an introduction to animal cognition. We will examine cognitive abilities in a variety of species, from invertebrates to nonhuman primates. Major topics to be discussed include: perception and attention, learning and memory, spatial representation, social cognition, tool-use, imitation and culture, communication and language, theory of mind, and the evolution of cognition.
