S- Anxiety & Related Disorders

This course will cover a range of topics related to fear, anxiety, and anxiety disorders. We will explore the science of fear learning and the factors that influence the development of anxiety and related disorders, as well as the evidence-based assessment and treatment of anxiety disorders. There will be a special emphasis on translating research findings into clinical applications and practice.

S- Work Life Balance

Students will evaluate research on the psychology of happiness with an emphasis on how to promote happiness through work/life balance. Topics will include concepts and measurements of happiness, evaluating workplace satisfaction, understanding the impact of stress, and resiliency.

S- Teaching Disability

In this course, students will explore approaches to teaching about disability and ableism, from early childhood through adulthood. Students will research best practices to raise awareness and understanding of disability as diversity in school, home, higher education and community settings. Students will have the opportunity to facilitate activities, workshops and trainings in campus and community settings.

S- Stress Neurobiology

This course covers the neural circuits and biochemical mechanisms underlying the body's response to stress and the impact of stress on mental health. In place of a textbook, assigned readings include peer-reviewed research and review articles, with the primary focus on preclinical studies using animal models.

S-Social&Emotional Development

This course will examine core issues in social and emotional development from birth through adolescence. Emphasis will be on the key concepts and theoretical approaches that guide our understanding of emotion processing and its impact on social behavior. Biological and contextual factors that influence trajectories of social and emotional development will be considered across typical and atypical populations of children.

S-Sci Studies of Consciousness

Research in Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience is constantly revealing new facts about how we see, hear, speak, move, recognize, remember, learn, and reason. The goal of these scientific studies is to explain these mental processes thoroughly and completely. However, many people feel that there is something about our consciousness or inner mental life that can never be explained by any scientific theory, no matter how advanced. In this seminar, we will ask what consciousness is, and will assess what current science can tell us about it.

S-RiskyBehaviors,EmotionDysreg

This course will review research related to risky behaviors, emotion dysregulation, and interpersonal stress in psychopathology. Topics will include definitions and models of these three experiences/processes, including reviewing findings on contributing biological, social, and cognitive factors: and the association and intersection of these three processes with psychopathology.

S-Psychology and Public Policy

This course is designed for students to explore connections between psychology and public policy, and to envision ways in which psychology research can inform policy issues and contribute to the public good. Topics will include how public responses to policy issues may be shaped by ways in which issues are framed, how research findings from psychology might usefully contribute to public discourse about social issues, and how psychology researchers and policymakers can work together effectively to promote social change.
