In this honors colloquium, in addition to the requirements of the base course, students will need to complete additional work, research, and/or writing as directed by the instructor. Students will perform analysis of some type of data related to the course, and will learn how to create an annotated bibliography or literature review. Additionally, they will display their findings in either a paper or a presentation. Students will learn more in-depth how Sociologists do their research, how to locate and identify peer-reviewed academic work, and to explore a topic of interest to them.

Scandinavian Mythology

The evolution from primitive, shamanistic ritual to the sophisticated, multifaceted cosmology of the Vikings. Emphasis on the various aspects of mythology during the first millennium A.D. The myths and legends associated with members of the Nordic pantheon through written sources, archaeological evidence, and findings in the field of comparative mythology. Conducted in English.

Practicum

A practicum/internship will help you gain invaluable knowledge and skills that can serve as a stepping-stone to your career. You can find an internship locally, in a major city, or abroad. Seeking an practicum/internship requires a great deal of initiative on your part - you must both find a site where you can work and connect with a faculty member who will support you in your academic efforts related to that work.

Honors Thesis

Honors Thesis expectations are high. The intended end-product is a traditional research manuscript with accompanying artifact(s), all theses: - are 6 credits or more of sustained research on a single topic, typically conducted over two semesters. - begin with creative inquiry and systematic research. - include documentation of substantive scholarly endeavor. - culminate in an oral defense or other form of public presentation.

Research Practicum
