Gender & Race in US Social Pol

What are the problems associated with developing equitable and just policy? Why does social policy in the United States continue to be marked by tensions between the principle of equality and the reality of inequalities in social, political, and economic realms? How might policy subvert or reinforce these differences and inequalities? This class examines the history of social policy in the United States, particularly those policies affecting concerns of gender, race, and class.

Strumming and Singing: Ukulele

Have you always wanted to learn to play the ukulele? Do you love to sing by yourself and with others? This seminar will help students explore their musical side in a fun and supportive environment. Students will: (1) learn ukulele basics, including tuning, chords, strumming patterns, and fingerpicking, as well as a variety of songs they can play and sing by themselves or with others; (2) learn about the history of the ukulele and its iconic performers and ensembles; (3) create and perform their own ukulele and vocal cover song arrangements.

LGBTQ+ Issues in Education

This class is about LGBTQ+ issues related to children, teens, and young adults in schools and college. This is a big and broad topic, but we will narrow it down based on your interests as we move through the semester. We will also cover some ?college tips? to help you successfully navigate your first year of college.

Artfcial Intellgnce-College

In this hands-on course, students will uncover ways to use generative artificial intelligence (genAI) tools to improve their learning and enhance their college experience. Each week students will use genAI tools to explore common challenges faced in college, including time management, finances, choosing a major, roommate conflicts, supporting mental and physical well-being, making friends, and doing well in college classes.

Radical America: the history

American radical traditions have been central to pushing forward ongoing struggles for democracy and equal rights: ?liberty and justice for all.? Among Millenials and Gen Z, the popularity of democratic socialists Bernie Sanders and AOC are signifiers of the interest among youth to left wing radical ideas and movements. Yet long-term, dominant ideologies that privilege existing power structures ? capitalist-colonialist, white supremacist, patriarchal ? have largely buried widespread consciousness of the rich spectrum of dynamic, impactful, U.S. radical traditions.

Fermentation is Fun!

This class will focus on introducing and developing and understanding of the role of Chemistry in fermentable foods such as pickles, kimchi and more. Most cultures around the world have developed their own styles of fermented foods, and they all share some basic similar chemical requirements. Through our discussion we will learn more about how to influence the efficiency of the fermentation process and what variables matter most.

Explores a variety of issues related to a Residential Academic Program (RAP) topic from both current and historical contexts. Students participate in small group projects and class discussions. Provides a supportive environment for personal reflection and critical thinking on the topics germane to the course content. Students will identify ways to incorporate personal interests with academic interests.
