Curriculum Development

This course offers a foundational introduction to theory, research, and practice of curriculum development. We will examine competing theories of curriculum; current and historical curricular debates; recognized ?best practices? in curriculum design; and the relationships among curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, and social justice.

Practicum

Iranian Revolution/GlobalPersp

This course examines the roots of the 1979 Iran revolution, the nature of the state and society that resulted from it within a broader global context, and the revolution?s transnational impact. The first unit focuses on pre-revolutionary Iran, examining national and global forces that laid the groundwork for the revolution. The second unit covers the global ramifications of the revolution in the 1980s, a crucial decade in the formation of the Islamic Republic and today?s Middle East.

S-Political Geography

An analysis of how and why we organize the world into political territories and into geographically based political alliances and systems, and the consequences of this organization for people and environments. The first half of the course focuses on the practice of organizing the world into bordered political units, emphasizing especially the history and consequences of the nation-state system. The second half of the class focuses on the politics of development and the globalizing economy.

Publishing as Practice

This studio course focuses on both analog and digital forms of self-publishing as a mode of creative practice and knowledge production. Through readings, discussion, field trips, guest lectures, and the production of their own publications, students will gain insight into the many facets of building independently published work?from content creation to printing to distribution? and evaluate approaches to disseminating it to their intended audiences.

Five College Collegium

The Five College Collegium is the flagship ensemble of the Five College Early Music Program. The ensemble is made up of experienced singers and instrumentalists from the Five College Consortium, and prepares two large-scale projects in the course of the academic year for public performance. The Collegium rotates its rehearsal residency among the schools in the Five College system, and focuses on repertoire from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.
