Intro to Film & Media Studies

This course introduces students to FMS through units that pair four scholarly approaches with four influential media forms: the Aesthetics of Film, the History of Television, the Ideologies of Video Games, and the Technologies of Internet Media. Through these units, students will ask: what human desires animate our relationship with media? For what purposes have people invented and evolved these technologies? How do makers use them, and what are audiences seeking in them?

Outsmarting Pathogens

Smallpox, a disfiguring infection called "one of the most devastating diseases known to humanity" by the World Health Organization, was eradicated from the planet through immunization. Polio paralyzed 350,000 children a year until immunization reduced infection by 99%. Why have we succeeded in immunizing against these pathogens but not HIV or the common cold? Students in this seminar will discuss primary literature in immunology, microbiology, and epidemiology to learn how vaccines outsmart pathogens.

In this course we will examine the neurobiological, physiological, and psychological responses to stress. We will investigate mechanisms of stress resilience and vulnerability as it pertains to physical and psychological health states, including how our individual responses to stress and methods of intervention. We will also explore developmental, social, and cultural implications of stress.

Organic Chemistry I

This course is an introduction to the structure, properties, reactivity, and spectroscopy of organic molecules, as well as their significance in our daily lives. We will first lay down the groundwork for the course, covering bonding, physical properties of organic compounds, stereochemistry, and kinetics and thermodynamics of organic reactions. We will then move on to the reactions of alkanes, alkyl halides, alcohols and ethers, alkenes, and alkynes, emphasizing the molecular mechanisms that allow us to predict and understand chemical behavior.

Computer Networks

This course introduces fundamental concepts in the design and implementation of computer communication networks, their protocols and applications. Topics covered include layered network architecture, physical layer and data link protocols; and transport protocols; routing protocols and applications. Most case studies are drawn from the Internet TCP/IP protocol suite. Designation: Systems. Prerequisites: CSC 110.

Colq: Queer Ecologies

What is learned by reading Queer Ecologies alongside Butler’s Lilith’s Brood, or Over the Hedge as environmental racism? The class considers what it means to have a racialized and sexualized identity shaped by relationships with environments. How is nature gendered, racialized and sexualized? Why? How are analytics of power mobilized around, or in opposition to, nature? How are conceptions of “disability” and “health” taken up in environmental justice movements?
