FYS-Mobile and Wearable Tech

This seminar will explore current and future mobile and wearable technologies. Each week, students will be introduced to a new technology (e.g. smartphones, smartwatches, smart glasses, biosensors, VR headsets, mo-cap suits). Students will learn about the design processes and decisions behind building these technologies, including their use cases, UI/UXs, and data collection.

Colq:Economic Research Methods

An introduction to the research workflow in economics. Drawing on examples from a variety of economic fields, students will learn how to search, read and write about the economic literature and to generate reproducible economic data analysis using statistical software like R and Stata. The course focuses on the practical skills needed to apply the tools from economic theory and econometric methods to real economic research questions. Prerequisites: ECO 220, ECO 240, SDS 220 or SDS 291; and ECO 250 or ECO 253. Enrollment limited to 25.

Politics of Inequality

The course explores comparative racial and ethnic politics in the U.S. during the twentieth century. We will analyze the creation and maintenance of structural inequalities through laws and policies targeted at persons of color in the areas of healthcare, transportation, immigration, labor, racial segregation, and education. Through readings, lectures and films, we will discuss critical histories of community struggle against social inequality, registering the central impact that race, class, gender, sexuality, and citizenship have had on efforts toward social justice.

(Offered as ECON 111E and ENST 230) An introduction to the core theories and measures of markets and the current economic system. We study both microeconomics, which addresses the central problem of resource scarcity and how markets for individual goods and services function, and macroeconomics, which addresses the economy as a whole and key aggregate measures such as unemployment and inflation.

An introduction to the nature of psychological inquiry regarding the origins, variability, and change of human behavior. As such, the course focuses on the nature-nurture controversy, the processes associated with cognitive and emotional development, the role of personal characteristics and situational conditions in shaping behavior, and various approaches to psychotherapy.

French in Practice

The course provides a forum for seniors for the practice of spoken French at the advanced level with native speakers. Students will prepare and deliver presentations; practice interviewing techniques; and learn and practice using technical vocabulary from a variety of disciplines in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The choice of short readings and vocabulary sets will vary each time the course is offered and will reflect the interests of the students enrolled.
