Reasoning Under Uncertainty

Development of mathematical reasoning skills for problems that involve uncertainty. Counting and probability -- basic counting problems, probability definitions, mean, variance, binomial distribution, discrete random variables, continuous random variables, Markov and Chebyshev bounds, Laws of large numbers, and central limit theorem. Probabilistic reasoning -- conditional probability and odds, Bayes' Law, Markov Chains, Bayesian Network.

Stories of Race in the US

From film scripts to news reports, across memoirs, policy narratives, and mythologies of the nation, stories of race abound in the United States. This course examines the power of stories, a prevalent and familiar mode of communication, in constructing racialized people and communities and shaping racial histories and cultures in the US.

P-LitProgramming,Editing&Publ

In this practicum students learn skills related to literary programming, editing, and publishing. Topics will include strategies for and approaches to running a successful reading series, managing and producing a literary journal, book publishing, and others. Students will have the opportunity to work on the English Dept. journal Jabberwocky and to intern for the MFA's Visiting Writers Series. Students may also take the practicum to support their work on professional literary internships they have secured themselves.
