This course offers extensive practice of literary translation with readings of key texts by translators of Iberian and Latin American literatures. Students will work on a semester-long project of their choice that is a translation involving any language combination of Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, and English. As students become familiar with the varying views of translation, they will develop their ability to talk and write about translators' strategies and choices, and recognize translation as a scholarly activity.

This new course is a collaboration between the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and the Spanish and Portuguese Studies at UMass. It combines community engagement, translation and storytelling in order to foreground the importance of multilingualism and the challenge and beauty of growing with more than one language and one culture. The course will explore some of the ways in which Spanish-English/Portuguese-English translations of children?s literature and bilingual storytelling may be applied to facilitate inclusive public storytime programs that celebrate linguistic diversity.

Using a hands-on approach, this course provides an introduction to the principles and methods of linguistic reconstruction to describe major derivational processes of language change from Classical Latin to Modern Spanish.

Spain's history and identity; the role of the church, women, and social classes. Use of literary and non-literary texts, and videos. Historical periods covered depend on the instructor and/or semester. Prerequisite: SPANISH 320 or 321 or 322 or 323, or consent of instructor.
