Environmental Epidemiology

This course will explore contemporary topics and methods in studying the link between the physical environment and population?s health, i.e. environmental epidemiology. Many chronic diseases are of unknown or multifactorial etiology but may likely be related to environmental exposures. Environmental epidemiology focuses on the ways environmental factors affect the health of populations. Topical areas include effects of air pollution, pesticides, metals, and endocrine disrupting chemicals on a wide range of health outcomes, including, neurodevelopment, reproductive, and metabolic functions.

S-Cartography & Geovisualiztn

Students will understand and implement principles of good design in cartography along with understanding the human vision and how it influences perception and cognition. The course will also cover the scope of contemporary thematic cartography and web mapping. Students will gain hands-on experience in designing and improving web-based maps. In this course, students will: - Learn the fundamentals of cartography and map design - Become familiar with using open source tools to improve the visual quality of web-based and other maps - Create maps through independent design and exploration

Exploring the Universe

Lecture: For nonscience majors. Introductory survey of astronomy. How we learn about the Universe and what we already know of it, how it originated, evolves, and its ultimate fate. Emphasis on modern research in solar phenomena, stellar evolution (including white dwarfs, neutron stars, pulsars, and black holes) and galaxy studies (including quasars). Lab: Multiple sections. For nonscience students. Introduction to the night sky, telescopes, astronomical events, and celestial maps.

Intermediate German

Literary and expository texts as well as audio-visual materials prepare students to read and discuss German fiction and non-fiction with understanding and enjoyment. Review of the chief aspects of German grammar. Stresses improvement of reading facility and vocabulary with continued practice in speaking and writing. GERMAN 240 fulfills the Colleges of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and Humanities and Fine Arts Language requirement. Prerequisite GERMAN 230

Intro Afro-Amer Political Sci

A survey of the politics of black people and their struggle for citizenship rights from 1787 to the present. The history of black political development and the theories to which it has given rise; and the two party struggles since the passage of 1965 Voting Rights Act--such as the rise of the Republican Right, Jesse Jackson's two 1980's presidential campaigns and the 2008 path-breaking election of Barack Obama to the presidency of the United States. ST-Networks&SpectralGraphThry

This course provides an introduction to complex networks, their structure, and function, with examples from applied mathematics and social sciences. Topics include spectral graph theory, notions of centrality, random graph models, Markov chains and random walks, cascades and diffusion. We will also introduce wavelet transformation on signals, as well as spectral graph wavelet transform that captures abrupt changes of signals on a network.

ST- Knot Theory

Introduction to the fascinating theory of knots, links, and surfaces in 3- and 4-dimensional spaces. This course will combine geometric, algebraic, and combinatorial methods, where the students will learn how to utilize visualization and make rigorous arguments.
