This course provides students with the opportunity to explore approaches to community development and organizing. Students will gain skills and techniques to involve people in the analysis of the health problems that affect them. Students will also discuss potential solutions to community health problems. This course will incorporate new technologies as tools to examine local community health issues. Students will also be introduced to the principles and methods of community participatory research in local communities.

MentalHealth&CareSystems/US

This introductory mental health course provides an overview of mental health disorders and associated disease burden and risk factors, and also describes the current configuration of the US mental health industry including associated facilities and providers and best practice methods to treat mental health disorders. This course then emphasizes the importance of public health interventions to supplement existing treatment modalities in order to address mental health disease burden and associated risk factors.

Public Health Communications

The public health community - individuals and organizations - have an important role to play in shaping how populations receive and gain access to accurate health information. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention defines health communication as "the and use of communication strategies to inform and influence individual and community decisions that enhance health." This class will provide an introduction to the issues and methods associated with effective communication of health related information.

Case Studies/US Health Policy

In this course, students will learn about basics of the policy process in the United States, with a focus on issues pertaining to health and healthcare. Students will develop an understanding of how political factors and aspects of the policy environment shape public health and the provision of healthcare services at both the national and state level.

Cancer and the Environment

This class will provide an overview of how cancer is seen from the perspective of environmental health. We will explore in-depth how cancer is diagnosed, what is meant by "cancer clusters," how environmental chemicals are tested for their carcinogenicity, and how cancer trends have increased over time. The remainder of the semester will focus on environmental agents that have been implicated in human cancers.

Epidemiology in Public Health

This course is intended to introduce the science of epidemiology and to explore how epidemiologic methods are applied to solving public health problems. Students will learn basic quantitative methods, study design concepts, and critical thinking skills relating to infectious and chronic disease epidemiology.

MCH in the Developing World

This course is designed to give students a broad overview to pertinent topics in the field of global maternal and child health. Topics covered include causes of maternal and infant mortality, treatment of malaria in pregnancy, HIV and pregnancy, infant nutrition, maternal and child nutrition, gender roles, and cultural and religious concepts in relation to working in a global setting. This course will explore approaches to public health programming that acknowledge and incorporate cultural differences.
