While Many of Du Bois' contemporaries theorized about race, Du Bois applied sociological principles to identify meaningful solutions to the problems associated with racism. This course is about why Du Bois's work matters today. We will be covering the work of Du Bois in conversation with contemporary scholars from the era of Reconstruction to Black Lives Matter.

Man has used breeding programs for the last 3000 years to increase yields of plants, to incorporate specific traits into farm animals and pets. Early motivation was probably first survival then commerce. Early tools were based in careful observation. Today, we have biotechnology: the ability to genetically engineer almost any organism. The ability to change and/or create any bio-molecule, drug, antibiotic, fuel or crop is almost at our fingertips. But what will make it happen?

This course will introduce students to the study of international environmental politics. It will review the nature of global environmental threats, and the history of collective responses to these problems, looking particular at the contributions of governments, international organizations, NGOs, the private sector and the scientific community to broader international environmental governance.

This course deals with three aspects of language vaariation and use: (i) Attitudes toward non-standard dialects in the USA; (ii) How people use language to construct their own identity or impose identities on others; and (iii) The social functions of speach, particularly being (im)polite.

Inspired by the programs in "Cultural Geography" pioneered by the Universities of California, Oregon and Washington, this course will examine the manner in which literature and other forms of cultural production reflect and in some cases influence the spaces and places in which they were produced. We will consider the works of authors such as Grazia Deledda, Alberto Moravia, Salvatore DiGiacomo, Natalia Ginzburg, Aldo Palazzeschi, Giorgio Bassani, and Giovanni Verga, as well as poets, songwriters, and film directors such as Eugenio Montale, Fabrizio DeAndre and Vittorio DeSica.

Readings in biblical prose and poetic passages; emphasis on Hebrew grammar, style, and vocabulary. Passages vary.

This course will provide students with fundamental knowledge underlying the benefits of strength and conditioning. Emphasis is placed on the design and implementation of effective strength and conditioning programs for performance as well as health and fitness. We will apply the multi-disciplinary knowledge in the science of exercise, physical activity, biomechanics and bioenergetics to various populations to identify how they impact performance.
