Greeks, Romans, and Others

An introduction to the study of Classics through the lens of responses to and reuses of the Classical past in different historical eras, including the contemporary world. Emphasis on different forms of interaction between populations differentiated by geography, language, and status within antiquity and on how those differences have affected the understanding of Classics over time. (Gen. Ed. HS, DG)

Greek Civilization

Survey of ancient Greek literature, art, and society. The major Greek states (Mycenae, Sparta, Athens, Macedonia) and their political and cultural development from Neolithic to the Classical and Hellenistic periods, emphasizing Greek influence on Roman and later western civilization. (Gen.Ed. HS)

Myths and Truths in Psychology

Unlike some other scientific fields, we all have some naive understanding and conception about psychology, perhaps because we think we know ourselves quite well. For example, one without expertise in chemistry can only guess what happens if she mixes hydrogen peroxide with dishwashing detergent and yeast, but one without expertise in psychology may easily conclude that listening to music while studying boosts attention and therefore improves performance. However, much of what we believe to be true about ourselves and the human nature is very often false.

Intermed Macroeconomic Theory

Theories of determination of national income, employment, and the price level. Monetary and fiscal policy. Income inequality and economic instability. The course will emphasize the use of economic theory to understand current developments and policy issues in the U.S. and international economy. It will differ from a standard Econ 204 course by providing more opportunities to develop research and writing skills. The course will be especially useful for students interested in doing a senior capstone or thesis.
