ST- Topics in Advanced Urdu IV

This course is designed to allow an advanced student of Urdu to focus on topics and domains of language use relevant to his/her individual goals. Weekly assignments will be chosen by the student and mentor in consultation with the program coordinator. Students are expected to write, present ideas orally, and to work with the language mentor to facilitate each week's discussion. The goal is to increase oral and written fluency, breadth of vocabulary, and cultural knowledge in the areas of interest. This course may be repeated with changes in topic and focus.

ST- The Conservation Canon

In this course, we will read and talk about a selection of the seminal books in the conservation canon. For example, Aldo Leopold's "Sand County Almanac" and the Conservation Ethic that it espouses have changed how we view and interact with nature, it is a well written book, and something we all should read. Other potential authors include E.O. Wilson and Rachel Carson, but the class participants will collectively choose subsequent readings.

S-Performance & Performativity

The course will consider two distinct genealogies of performativity - that of J. L. Austin and that of Judith Butler. This will be followed by an exploration of the importance of performance to an understanding of contemporary theories of blackness. Our enquires will proceed through a range of expressive sites, including sound, music video, film, TV, literature, photography, and everyday behavior. We will pay close attention to the distinction between the two ideas, and consider how each deals with common concerns such as gender formation, subjection, spectatorship, utterance and subversion.
