ST- Read Stories, Make Money

From the letters of Jeff Bezos and Warren Buffett, to mission statements of companies such as Google and Facebook, the business world is filled with texts that reveal the forces and people shaping that world today. This course is designed for students from all majors who are interested in learning about the importance of creating and possessing compelling narratives in the world of business. Students will acquire the skills to read texts critically and apply newly gained perspectives to current news in the business press, going around and beyond the conventional mathematical approaches.

The course will explore several areas of applications including: aircraft maintenance, semiconductor chip manufacturing, hospice data, spectroscopy data, genomic signal processing, among others. The requirements for the class are skill in Python scripting, Python coding, machine learning, hyper-paramater tuning. The course will have at least three projects; and some guest speakers.

ST-Intro to Dance/Non Majors

In this studio-based class, students will develop their abilities to express and communicate through their bodies, by experiencing ways of dancing from around the world. Through movement exploration, observation, discussion, reading, and written reflection, students will develop literacy as it relates to dance, culture, and the creative process. This class is for all levels, no experience necessary.

ST-Intermediate Hip Hop/House

This street dance course is designed for dancers to learn the fundamentals of Hip-Hop and House dance. Students will learn the history and culture of Hip-Hop and House along with dance terminology and movements. Class will include across the floor drills and center combinations which will ask the dancers to find their relationship to musicality, athleticism, dynamics, and articulation of the body. Students will be introduced to the "jack" and maintain that groove while doing a variety of footwork patterns.

ST-StudentLoans, Debt, Us Econ

This course discusses the following topics: a) Student loans and their impact on students, their families, and the macroeconomy (for example, by lowering homeownership); b) Household consumer debt, including mortgage and its macroeconomic effects; c) Debt finance by firms and its implications for financial instability; d) Government debt and growth.

ST- Influencer Marketing

With half of companies spending up to a million dollars per year and over 700 agencies created for Influencers, this new approach has taken on a critical role in marketing. In this class, we will discuss how to work with influencers from the company perspective with topics such as finding the right fit for your mission message, managing your budget for influencers and best metrics for partnerships. In the second half, we will focus on becoming an influencer with topics ranging from branding your authentic self to social media plans and rate card development.

ST-Top/Geom Singular Spaces

Singular spaces arise naturally in many contexts, including algebraic geometry and representation theory. Any singular space has a decomposition into manifolds (a "stratification"), and so the study of them is a mixture of topology, geometry, and combinatorics. The goal of this course is to present the basics of stratified spaces and to illustrate the general theory with some important examples.

ST-Persian Epic: Book of Kings

The Persian Epic of Shahname (The Book of Kings) is a classic of World Literature, which has deeply influenced Persian mythology and folklore. In this course we will examine this timeless book from literary and historical perspective, and discuss such varied topics as the Mythology of Sacred Kingship, The Persian Empire, and Virtue and Justice in the Ancient Religion. The course is open to all levels, and no background in the topic is assumed. All readings in English translation.

Pollinators: Ecology & Conserv

We will explore the connections between insects and the plants that they pollinate, and discuss why these processes are fundamental to ecosystem and agricultural sustainability. Topics include evolutionary and ecological concepts that underlie the coevolution between flowers and their pollinators. The course will emphasize the biology of honey bees, wild bees, the monarch butterfly, and syrphid flies. We will cover applied pollination in agricultural settings and delve into the issues and solutions regarding pollinator conservation.

ST-Evolution of Human Behavior

This course introduces the student to the basic principles of evolutionary and sociobiological theory in order to better understand the evolution of brain and behavior of modern humans. We will cover selective forces influencing Hominin evolution, brain development, mating systems, mate choice, cooperation, altruism, attachment, cognition and communication using a broad comparative and phylogenetic approach.
