This course will examine the effects of stigma and discrimination on physical health outcomes and will consider the biological, psychological, and behavioral pathways through which these effects occur. Course readings will cover a range of stigmatized identities (e.g., ethnicity, LGBTQ) and will highlight the commonalities and differences in outcomes among individuals who belong to these groups. The course will also cover interventions to both reduce the existence of stigma and to help those who experience stigma to better cope with the experience.

Engineering failures are always interesting stories which ignite concerns about the condition of our infrastructure and our methods of designing, constructing and modeling structural systems. Every engineering loss is also a lesson to be learnt through the study of how, why and what happened and what can be done to prevent future failures. This course will consist of two main parts. The first part will investigate prominent structural failures and will present to the students the forensic investigations outcomes and main related issues narrating the known facts reported.

This course provides an overview of the fundamental concepts of basic accounting and finance, focusing on their application to managing engineering projects and organizations. Key topics covered include basic accounting terminology and methods, financial statements and how to interpret them, sources of finance available to businesses, engineering project accounting and financing, and personal and corporate financing basics.

Foundations in Microbiology

This course will introduce Microbiology majors to the extremely diverse and exciting world of microorganisms. The course begins with describing the basics of microorganisms: structure and function, metabolic pathways, physiology, and genetics. These topics are used as a base to discuss more complex microbial systems we study in environmental microbiology, medical microbiology, and applied biotechnology. We will explore the wonderfully extensive diversity of microbes and discuss this diversity within the context of evolution and what `species? means in microbiology.

The First World War

The First World War was one of the crucial events of modern history. This course examines the background of the war, the historiography of its principal phases, key actors, and experiences on the military and home fronts. We conclude with questions concerning the war's impact on the next global conflict. The course gives special attention to the events in Germany. Taught in English.
