ST-PracticingSpanishCulturalSt

Since the introduction of cultural studies as a mode of inquiry twenty five years ago, Spanish departments in the US have changed dramatically (Graham & Labanyi 1995; Jordan & Morgan-Tamosunas 2000). Academic programs have broadened their subject matter and scholars have responded by adapting their epistemological foundations. At present, literary studies approaches share the space with cultural studies and closely related fields such as visual studies, performance studies, gender and sexuality studies.

ST-Linguistics/Translators

How do we translate linguistic time from one language to the other? What do translations do? How do we recognize the "voice" of the translator? What do we learn from the translation of emotions between different languages? This course explores the interrelationships between Translation Studies and Linguistics, highlighting explicitly the benefits of mutual interaction between the disciplines.

Issues we address include: judicial review and the countermajoritarian difficulty; judicial policy making and the implementation and impact of court decisions; the response of courts to public opinion, and the responses of citizens and institutions to court decisions; social movement litigation; and methods of judicial selection and the representativeness of legal institutions.

Computer Systems Principles

Large-scale software systems like Google - deployed over a world-wide network of hundreds of thousands of computers - have become a part of our lives. These are systems success stories - they are reliable, available ("up" nearly all the time), handle an unbelievable amount of load from users around the world, yet provide virtually instantaneous results.

What do we know about Shi'i societies in the past or present or about their beliefs and practices? Where are these societies located and how did they develop? From its inception to various steps of transformation and in its many manifestations in history and in the modern world, the many misrepresentations and misinformation have created a sense of mystery about this topic.
