Advanced Conversation

Course taught in French. Conversation practice on assigned topics. Dictation of prepared texts to improve listening comprehension. Recitation of short passages of French poetry and prose to improve pronunciation. Prerequisites: Completion of a French 240 level course.

This weekend conference takes place on the Boston University campus in April. Top-flight practitioners will present on issues and challenges facing beginning journalists as well as longtime professionals. After the spring semester begins, the conferees from UMass will meet at a mutually agreed upon time twice before the event and once afterwards.

American Politics

Offers an overview of the American political system and the theories of those who both celebrate and criticize it. Focuses on the institutions of American politics, including the Constitution, the presidency, Congress, the courts, parties, elections, interest groups, and movements seeking political change. Also includes a theoretical focus: a critical examination of the varieties of liberalism, conservatism, pluralism, and democracy that inform the practice of American politics.

ST-Public Speaking/Public Pol

This course aims to improve public speaking skills of graduate students in Public Policy, both as speakers and listeners. Students will practice informative and persuasive speeches in face-to-face as well as mediated contexts (i.e., online settings). Likewise, we will discuss ethics and active listening in public speaking. Students will develop core skills in composing, delivering, and assessing speeches. They will practice extemporaneous and impromptu speeches tailored to students' professional needs and area of specialization.
