S-Critical Prison Studies

There are currently over 2 million people living in prisons and jails across the United States - more incarcerated people per capita than any other country in the world. What is the carceral state and how do particular gendered and racialized bodies get caught up in its logics? How do gender, race, sexuality, and class shape systems of discipline, punishment, surveillance, and control? What is "anti-carceral feminism" and what are some of the abolitionist critiques of the prison industrial complex?

ST-Spring Beacon Hill Project

How does government really work at the city, state, and federal level? How do politicians, advocacy groups, and citizens make change to law and policy? How did top leaders in government, nonprofit, and the private sector get where they are now? These are some of the questions we'll explore with the Beacon Hill Seminar. During the seminar, students will meet with impressive alums, business and nonprofit leaders, and officials in a small-group setting and make connections for client projects, internships, and job contacts.

S-Const Amendment Workshop

What if a Constitution drafted in the 18th century is inadequate to the needs of a 21st century nation? How should we amend it? In this hands-on course blending team-based learning and discussion-based classes, students will jointly identify a small number of perceived deficiencies in the US Constitution, research the history, interpretation, and application of the operative provisions, explore alternative models from other constitutions, and develop proposed amendments for presentation to and discussion by the entire class.

ST-Spies and Spying in History

Covert information gathering seems glamorous, dangerous and effective. This is the spy novel and movie image. But is it real? In particular, is it actually effective and if so, when and why? In this course we will learn about spies and spying generally and examine in depth several specific cases of espionage, analysis and code-breaking, mostly from the 20th century. Our main question is whether the information collection was significant (even decisive) in military or political goals they were meant to aid.
