The course will cover principles of graphic design, visualizing information, information graphics, and portfolio design. Course lectures will be complemented by digital skills workshops where students will become familiar with graphic design software (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign). Through weekly exercises, students will build the skills necessary to complete a portfolio of creative work, or a visual book or project showcasing a body of research. This course will examine the movement of people throughout the United States from the period of Reconstruction to the current immigration debates. Special attention will be paid to the movement of African Americans from South to North, and the movement of immigrants from Europe, Asia, and South America through the twentieth century. The course will also consider immigration law and policy. Focus will be on primary and secondary source readings.

This course surveys the culture, religion and history of India from 1500 BCE to 1700 CE. Focusing primarily on the Indian subcontinent, the course examines the major social, religious, and material factors that shaped the history and culture of this region. We will explore the following themes: the emergence of a Vedic-Aryan culture, the rise of cities, states and the religions of Buddhism and Jainism, the growth of classical Hinduism, the makings of an Indo-Islamic culture, and rise and fall of the Mughal empire.
