Statistical Thermodynamics
Molecular theory of macroscopic properties of thermodynamic systems. Averaging; ensembles; probabilities and distribution functions; fluctuations, scattering and ensemble equivalence; quantum, classical and lattice statistics; applications such as computation of thermodynamic properties, imperfect gases, adsorption, correlation functions and Fourier transforms, polymer chain dynamics, phase transformations and radial distribution functions. Prerequisite: CHEM 476 or equivalent.
People & Their Lang (colloq)
In-depth study of selected topics covered in Linguist 101. Choice of topics to be determined in consultation with students.
People & Their Language
Language is a uniquely human instinct. It is also our most important cultural artifact. This course examines language as an instinct and as a social construct that dynamically shapes and is shaped by history, class, status, ethnicity, gender, and institutions like the media and the law. Introductory Biology Lab
This course is a 2 credit laboratory experience that allows students to apply the biological concepts covered in Biology 151 and 152 Introductory Biology in laboratory and field settings. Students will develop and practice scientific research skills while exploring the areas of genetics, cell and molecular biology, evolution, and ecology. To enroll, students must be co-enrolled in Biology 152 (Introductory Biology II) or have completed the 2 semester Introductory Biology Sequence (Biology 151 and 152).
BIOCHEMISTRY I LAB
Techniques of modern biochemistry: ultraviolet spectrophotometry and spectrofluorimetry, SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, Scatchard analysis, and a project lab on linked enzyme kinetics. Prerequisite: BIO 203. BCH 252 is a prerequisite or must be taken concurrently.
