Community Engagement Seminar

This seminar is the first of three courses in the Sophomores-Serve program and introduces students to concepts and skills that prepare them to engage effectively with the local community. Topics include inquiry into the meanings of the social identities we each carry, practice in the skill of dialogue with people whose perspectives and life experiences differ from our own, and beginning discussions on leadership, citizenship, and social justice.

FYS - "Is Food Thy Medicine?"

"Let Food be Thy Medicine," one of the most widely quoted phrases of Hippocrates, has taken on new meaning in our contemporary society as companies flood the marketplace with nutraceuticals and functional foods to capitalize on their health promoting claims. In this course we will examine the science behind the claims through the lens of food science, epigenetics, chemoprevention and pharmacognosy.

S- College Music Curriculum

This course concentrates on the issues involved in developing music curricula for students in grades K-12 and in music teacher education programs. Together we will explore what we teach, why we teach, and how we teach through historical, philosophical, psychological, and sociological lenses, and gain a deeper understanding of educational policy and its impact on school curricula. Students will examine and evaluate existing frameworks, assessment tools, and instructional strategies; complete fieldwork; and design their own individualized curriculum unit/project.

ST- Khmer III

Khmer III is the third part of a four-part elementary course sequence in Khmer. The independent study format includes small group conversation sessions and an evaluation by an outside evaluator. Students studying Khmer develop speaking and listening skills needed for study abroad in Cambodia and to support course work in Asian Studies.

Brave New World

Utopian and dystopian novels. The ability of literature to generate social critique. Readings include works by Huxley, Orwell, Kafka, Atwood, Burgess, Gibson, Piercy, Gilman, Dick, and others. (Gen.Ed. AL, G)

ST- Dutch III

S-Prac in Sch Psych Assessment

The purpose of this practicum is to provide students with practicing and supervised training in administering assessments common to the practice of school psychology. Such assessments include cognitive and intellectual assessment, educational and academic assessments, curriculum based assessments and measurement, and social/emotional and behavioral assessments.
