Air Pollution and Health

What is the air we breathe composed of and where do various pollutants come from? How does exposure to air pollutants manifest in chronic disease? What level of exposure is too much and how can I minimize my exposure? The goal of this course is to answer these questions and provide you with tools to quantify the environmental risks of air pollution.

Brave New World

Utopian and dystopian novels. The ability of literature to generate social critique. Readings include works by Huxley, Orwell, Kafka, Atwood, Burgess, Gibson, Piercy, Gilman, Dick, and others. (Gen.Ed. AL, G)

S-Women, Media, and Politics

In this course we examine how women are currently depicted in both popular culture and in the "mainstream" media. Specifically, we analyze the ways in which women's progress in terms of gaining political equality is, or may be, affected by, gendered representations (or the lack of women's presence) in the media. Various solutions to women's under-representation - whether in the Boardroom, in mass media, or in politics - have been proposed, and we consider the extent to which these may be effective or where they fall short.

S-Philosophical Paradoxes

This course will be an introduction to the most influential and mind-boggling philosophical paradoxes, from ancient times to the present. Included will be paradoxes of space and time (Zeno's paradoxes, the twin paradox in relativity); paradoxes of decision-making (Prisoner's Dilemma, Newcomb's problem, two-envelope paradox); paradoxes of belief and knowledge (Sleeping Beauty paradox, the Doomsday argument, the Surprise exam, the Lottery paradox); and paradoxes of logic and set theory (Russell's paradox, the Liar paradox, the Sorites paradox).
