Intro Stats/Soc Sci

Designed for students in the social science and business related fields of study. Introduction to basic statistical methods used to collect, summarize, and analyze numerical data. Emphasis on application to decision making; examples from the social sciences and business. Topics include: common statistical notation, elementary probability theory, sampling, descriptive statistics, statistical estimation and hypothesis testing. Basic algebra and familiarity with computer and internet necessary. (Gen.Ed. R2)

Basic Nutrition

Basic principles of human nutrition. Energy needs. Chemical structures, physical characteristics, and metabolism of protein, carbohydrate, lipids, minerals, and vitamins. Human requirements at various ages. Food sources. Effects of deficiency or excess on health. Prerequisites: general biology and chemistry; organic chemistry concurrent.

The purpose of this course is to support doctoral students interested in exploring theoretical and practical aspects of second language literacy, teachers' professional development, and school change from a sociocultural perspective.

Race, Media, & Politics-Honors

This course examines the changing role of "race" in American politics and society, focusing in particular on change over time in public opinion, media portrayals, and campaigns and elections. As we investigate these themes, we will analyz the impact of political communication on race relations, and evaluate strategies that could help to improve interracial relations in society.

This course will explore the relationship between nutrition, food and lifestyle with the development of cancer. Topics will include: international variations and trends of cancer; introduction of basic concepts and principles of the cancer process; evidence for physical activity (including body fatness) and cancer prevention; dietary and lifestyle recommendations for cancer prevention. The goal of this course is for students to develop insight into dietary and lifestyle strategies for cancer prevention.

S-Int'l Program Development

This course introduces students to the practical application of soft power programs including, but not limited to, one and two way exchanges; Fulbright's; and other programs that seek to introduce people around the world to the US as well as introducing US citizens to the world. The course will cover a broad array of academic and practical issues. We will start with an overview of the idea of exchange programs and then examine, by way of case study, the nations of Iraq and Pakistan.

ST- GIS in the Real World

Outside of academia, GIS is often different than what you have learned in Intro to GIS class. You need to work in an "enterprise" GIS environment, where you may have limited ability to alter or even access certain layers. This course will introduce you to how to work in an enterprise environment.
