ST-Imperial America:1848-Now

This graduate reading seminar explores the expansion and assertion of American imperial power from the US-Mexican War to the ?global war on terror.? Students will be introduced to the widest possible conception of US ?foreign relations? by evaluating the cultural, economic, political, and strategic factors that shaped American policy and by analyzing the lived experience of empire building and anti-imperial resistance at home and abroad. We will give special attention to how ideas of ?American exceptionalism?

A privateer is a vessel licensed by a government to attack and plunder enemy ships within a set of prescribed behaviors. Most works on the American Revolution spend little time on privateering and much time on the Continental Army. In truth, privateering was an equal part of the American bid for Independence. Nevertheless, since it was largely a private enterprise, historians have ignored it in order to establish their various myths of republican virtue at work.

Mixed Methods Research

Examines the history and philosophy as well as purposes and characteristics of mixed methods research, types of research problems addressed, major mixed methods designs, data collection, and analysis strategies.

Prerequisite: Doctoral standing or permission from instructor. One graduate-level course in quantitative research methods or statistics required.

Train For Non-Formal Ed

Skills needed to design and implement training programs for personnel in nonformal education, human services, and community development. Provides some direct experience in designing and conducting training exercises and assessing their outcomes. Emphasis given to non-classroom settings with cross-cultural components.
