Science in the modern world from the Enlightenment to the Cold War. Key scientific issues of the modern age, the social organization of science, the place of the scientific community in larger social and cultural context, and the expanding relationship between science and modern technology. Designed to introduce freshman psychology majors to UMass. We will review the resources and opportunities within the field of psychology and in the UMass psychology department, in particular. These include research opportunities, student organizations, advising, and other department resources. We will also discuss strategies and supports for making a good start in college more generally along with requirements for the major and other graduation requirements.

This is a writing-intensive course that fulfills the University's Junior Writing requirement. Each section focuses on a particular aspect of current issues in psychology. The topic is selected based on the expertise of the teaching staff. All sections share similar writing assignments, ranging from in-class short writing assignments to lengthy papers that include literature review. Classes emphasize discussion and extensive peer review of written work. Topics for individual sections will not be available until shortly before the start of the semester.

Conducted in English. An introduction and survey of medieval German literature, including the story of Siegfried and Kriemhild (Nibelungenlied), the visionary Hildegard of Bingen and the mystic Mechthild of Magdeburg, and the stories of the Grail (Wolfram?s Parzival) and Tristan and Islode (Gottfried). While the primary focus of the course will be on literature itself, we will try to see it in its cultural, historical, and social context. Language of instruction and all texts in English.
