Required for majors. Emphasis on an oral and written interpretation of current journal articles in selected fields of biochemistry. Fulfills first part of Junior Year Writing requirement (second part is BIOCHEM 526).
This is a student-led practicum experience that utilizes a plot of land on campus to grow edible and ornamental crops. Although offered every semester, specific garden activities depend on the season of the year. Mandatory pass/fail grading. Students may enroll more than once for credit.
Alankara: Arts in India study and tour is a unique 3-credit course offered over two semesters. In the fall semester, four (4) seminars will be held first to prepare students for travel to India through readings, viewing of audio-visual materials and guest presentations. These sessions will play a crucial role in the introduction, appreciation and understanding of India's arts & culture, people and society.
This course will cover major writers of the Black Chicago Renaissance of the 1930s-1950s, setting them in the context of the White Chicago Renaissance, the New Negro Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s, and other arts in Chicago in the era, and treating various aesthetics, goals, themes, symbols and images that express the zeitgeist of the movement.
This laboratory course will provide students with hands-on experience with essential laboratory methods use for public health research. Through a series of laboratory modules, students will learn to isolate and quantify their DNA, and perform PCR for DNA fingerprinting and genotyping. Other modules include Crime Scene Investigator, bioinformatics and epigenetics.
