Honors Discovery Seminars

This seminar is a required course for Commonwealth Honors College students where students participate in a topical seminar-style course designed by its instructor. While the subject matter of each section is different, advanced knowledge of the topic is not required. While the subject matter of each section is different, the requirements for each section are the same. Individual titles and descriptions of HONORS 391AH sections can be found on the Commonwealth Honors College website.

S- WebGIS

Students in WebGIS will explore web-based applications in geographic information science. This course will focus on hands-on practice using and building web-based mapping and analysis platforms, including Google Maps, ArcGIS Online, Leaflet, and Open Street Map. Along with conceptual discussion of how the internet, web servers, and cloud-based GIS services function, students will create and host web services relevant to their coursework, research, or professional goals.

Film Festival Lab: Creation...

Students will learn the essentials of film festival organization by using the Massachusetts Multicultural Film Festival (MMFF) as a detailed case study. Through close study of MMFF's planning and execution, students will learn about each stage of festival creation, from programming to marketing and audience outreach. Additionally, they will actively participate in the festival by co-leading discussions on selected films, fostering an environment of critical engagement and multicultural awareness.

S-Film Festival Undergrad Lab

Students will learn the essentials of film festival organization by using the Massachusetts Multicultural Film Festival (MMFF) as a detailed case study. Through close study of MMFF's planning and execution, students will learn about each stage of festival creation, from programming to marketing and audience outreach. Additionally, they will actively participate in the festival through discussions of the films. This hands-on approach provides students with valuable skills in both event planning and public discourse around cinema.

Construction Materials&Methods

Provides an introductory overview of the main materials used in commercial construction: steel, concrete, and masonry (wood is covered in BCT 304 / ECO 624). After receiving an introduction into fundamental principles of structural, physical and long-term performance, students learn about material and product manufacturing techniques and how they relate to mechanical and non-mechanical properties of the various materials. Common construction methods are introduced and building details are explored.

Literatures of Black Girlhoods

Finding Black girls in the literary archive is challenging, but not impossible. From the colonial era to the present, this course traces Black girls’ presence in the Black literary record – as inaugurators of a literary tradition and as central figures in the development and flourishing of that tradition. Organized thematically, the course presents students with a variety of literary genres that feature and center, in critical ways, the stories of Black girls.
